COP30: Action on Climate Change

Eurie Kim

Hello everyone! Today we have to discuss COP30, the key global climate conference that will determine the future of our planet. For those of you who don't know, COP (which stands for Conference of the Parties), is a yearly meeting of world leaders, scientists, and activists designed to wrestle with the issues around climate change (and climate inaction). It is a bit like a collective brainstorming session for the world, with real-life implications. COP30 in November 2025 will be in Belém, Brazil.

In a letter to parties on March 10, 2025, the President-designate outlined Brazil’s vision for COP30, stressing the need for urgent action. He discusses the importance of tackling “the interconnected global challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss” in a way that aligns with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

This is significant given that Brazil has the Amazon Rainforest—the most biologically diverse ecosystem in the world. Holding the conference in Brazil signals a call for preserving our forests, biodiversity, and indigenous land, and demands actions to combat climate change. The stakes are much higher at this point in time. The world has not met climate goals, and extreme weather event after extreme weather event has become our "new normal."

COP30 will provide an opportunity for countries to raise the stakes, raise their ambitions, and show that they are serious about addressing emissions, investing in renewable energy, and living up to the goals of the Paris Agreement. Also, note that climate action is not only the work of leaders but instead, everyone has a responsibility to contribute their part.
